MP launches English forestry strategy plan

More than 100 groups have joined forces to draw up a five-year action plan to promote trees in urban landscapes and on streets.

“Co-ordinated action is needed to create sustainability and trees resilient to climate change, and to help people, business and wildlife,” said a representative for England’s trees, woods and forests’ strategy group.

“Local environments will be improved with more high-quality wooded green spaces, close to where people live, and there will be a revival of trees in our streets.”

The England forestry strategy delivery plan was launched late last year by the Forestry Commission, Natural England and more than 100 organisations.

Landowners, tree businesses and conservation groups want to improve landscapes and increase numbers of people visiting woods for leisure and tourism.

MP Huw Irranca-Davies, who launched the plan, said it would offer guidance and support for delivery at regional and local levels.

The plan, Irranca-Davies added, would target resources, encourage efficiency, support market-based approaches and improve opportunities for co-ordination and collaboration.

“Many organisations have objectives that resonate with the new strategy. By achieving their objectives these partners can contribute to the plan.”
