Morrisons pleased with 2012 garden centre performance

Morrisons looks set to bring back its garden centres in 2013 after 130 opened successfully at the supermarket chain in 2012.

Several of the external garden centre temporary shops failed to win retrospective planning permission, including at Liskeard in Cornwall and Nelson, Lancashire, where local traders protested against the outlets.

A representative said: "All of our garden centres are currently closed.  The count at the end of last year was 130. Only a handful had their applications withdrawn.

"We wouldn’t discuss potential future openings or strategy which would be commercially sensitive information. I just can’t say how many or when for 2013 but we were very pleased but more importantly customers told us they enjoyed being able to shop the extended horticulture range."

The supermarket has been trading from the side of the stores opposite the car parks, selling plants and garden sundries.
