St Mary's Church of England High School in Cheshunt has two new football pitches, rugby and cricket pitches, an athletics track and tennis and netball courts as part of the construction.
MJ Abbott was awarded the sub-contract by Shepherd Construction (South Division) to create natural and artificial pitches at the school.
The work on an area of more than 6ha included topsoil stripping, cutting and filling to form the pitches. Primary drainage was installed at 7m spacings.
Sand was ameliorated into the indigenous topsoil to create free-draining natural turf pitches.
The site is located in an environmentally sensitive area close to the New River and next to protected woodland. A key challenge was to incorporate the arisings from the foundations from the school construction site — some 30,000cu m — into the sports pitches, said contracts director Nigel Wyatt.
The contract includes a 12-month after-care and maintenance programme. Work began on site at the end of April and is due for completion shortly. The overall project is due to finish in spring 2010.
