Minister meets wtih forestry industry in Ireland on ash dieback

Irish minister of state Shane McEntee, who has responsibility for forestry, has met with representatives from the Irish forest industry's Forest Liason Group for an update on the ash dieback disease Chalara fraxinea.

McEntee spoke on the evolution of the disease on the continent, the details of the Irish outbreak and the procedures being taken to tackle it.

He said ash plants from the same imported consignment related to the outbreak are being destroyed. The group welcomed the measures put forward by the Minister and expressed their support for the actions being taken.

He added that a voluntary moratorium from the forest nurseries on the importation of ash plants is in place to be strengthened by the introduction of legal measures in accordance with the relevant EU legislation.
