Middleton will close after Christmas if it does not receive funding in the next few days.
Head of education Trevor Roach said: “If the funding arrangements are not agreed by the end of November we will be unable to trade beyond Christmas. Something will have to be formulated this month. If we are not able to trade beyond Christmas we will have to close and the whole house of cards will fall down.”
Trustees are not allowed to knowingly trade while insolvent, so immediate cash is required when October’s emergency rescue package runs out.
Middleton is seeking funding from the Office of Science & Technology in a dash for cash to save the ailing garden.
Roach suggested that criticism of Middleton from garden planner William Wilkins was “a case
of angst” from someone who “wanted it all from day one” (HW, 20 November).
He added that the Welsh Assembly was “keeping quiet” about funding, as it does not “want to be perceived as a government that automatically supports a project with a Welsh connection”.
Roach confirmed Middleton will have a full Christmas programme.
