MGS Landscaping has completed improvements works in two woodlands thanks to £50,000 from the Biffa Award, a community fund from Biffa Waste Services.
Oakfield Glen and neighbouring Bashfordsland Wood are owned respectively by the Woodland Trust and Carrickfergus Borough Council in Antrim, Northern Ireland.
Oakfield Glen, which boasts new signage, was an 18th century countryman's residence with existing specimen trees. Contractors worked on path improvements and removing invasive species such as laurel and rhododendron.
Steel leaf sculptures, created by Kevin Killen with input from Oakfield Primary School, and a green gym help define areas of the habitat-rich sites, which host bullfinches, sparrowhawks, singing wrens, willow warblers and chiffchaffs.
Woodland Trust site manager Gregor Fulton said: "The two sites represent one seamless whole, giving visitors the option of a fairly lengthy woodland walk."
