Tell me about your key goals/priorities as a business for 2019.
Goals pretty much centre on the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and getting our packhouse up and running for our crops – we used to send them elsewhere because we didn't have the turnover, but next year we should have the turnover, and we also got grant money through a growth development funding organisation.
What do you feel will be the biggest challenge for you as a business (or for your sector) in 2019 – and why?
There are two: Brexit and labour, and we are feeling very vulnerable. Everything else is fine: demand for our product is great, there are no shortage problems and the warm summer was excellent for growing crops. The problem we have is will we have anyone to pick them? There are mixed messages across the entire food sector, which is very worrying.
What do you regard as the biggest opportunity for you as a business (or for your sector) in 2019 – and why?
For us it's targeting the higher tiers because we have brought in to the latest and greatest varieties, which will go the added-value sectors and make a huge difference to us in terms of price per pack. Packing on site means we will be able to supply punnets with our farm name on them direct to supermarkets.
What was the best thing about winning a Horticulture Week Business Award for you as a business?
It puts our name in front of the big supermarkets and other powerful players in the market. It proves we are a good, conscientious business, which our financial backers such as banks really like. Within two weeks of winning the Hort Week award they came out to have a look around. We get to put the logo on our stationery and it makes everyone in the business feel good.
