Launching the product at BTME 2010 in Harrogate last week, Syngenta technical manager Dr Simon Watson explained that when grass is cut, rising sap carries the highly systemic Heritage Maxx to the site of the wound - the point most susceptible to disease.
When the fungicide is washed down the leaf, it is reabsorbed by the plant and recycled to offer renewed protection, he explained.
"Furthermore, the unique root uptake of Heritage Maxx means any product that moves down into the root zone can still be taken up and used by the plant," added Watson.
"In fact, the activity on soil-borne pathogens, take-all patch and type-2 fairy rings can be further enhanced by the recycling route," he advised. "Other fungicides will be lost or wasted as soon as they hit the thatch or soil."
Developed as a liquid formulation specifically for turf, the sub-micron particle size of the Maxx formulation means the active ingredient (azoxystrobin) travels quickly into the leaf and around the plant, Watson explained. He added that the best results are achieved from application before visible symptoms appear.
"Sports Turf Research Institute trials have shown that application at periods of high risk, but before visible symptoms of disease break out, can give the best results from fewer applications over the course of the season," said Watson.
"If the signs of infection are visible, the fast action of Heritage Maxx will still stop further disease developing in clean leaves and minimise turf damage."
Heritage Maxx is available in recyclable three-litre packs. The application rate for all turf treatments is 2.5 litres/ha. There is no Local Environment Risk Assessment for Pesticides restriction.
