London common to see overhaul

Whitelaw Turkington is leading a team of London-based landscape architects and urban designers whose brief is to completely redesign Shepherd's Bush Common in west London.

Landscape architecture firms Form Associates and Barr Gazetas, with help from Waterman Group engineers, will work with Whitelaw Turkington on the £3.3m contract to transform the common.

The team was awarded the contract after winning a competition organised by the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham to redesign the area.

The team's design includes the simplification of the common's large central area into a flexible, functional space capable of hosting local events, fairs and other entertainments.

It also includes the creation of a boulevard around its perimeter that will provide safe, well-lit routes for walking and cycling and a space for potential markets.

A more detailed brief for the scheme will be developed through an extensive consultation process involving the active participation of local residents in addition to stakeholders.

Whitelaw Turkington is known for its work on high-profile public spaces such as Gillett Square, which was the first of the Mayor of London's "100 Public Squares for London" scheme to be completed.
