Lobby group backs home-grown apple juice

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) marked last month's Apple Day with a call to shoppers to ditch their morning orange juice for English apple juice.

Orange juice dominates the fresh juice category, accounting for 54 per cent of the market compared with 13 per cent for apple juice, most of which is imported to the UK as concentrate.

CPRE senior food and farming campaigner Graeme Willis said: "It's mad that orange juice is the king of breakfast juice when we have so much home-grown produce available. Despite having the ideal climate we import most of the apples we eat and all of the orange juice we drink."

English Apples & Pears chief executive Adrian Barlow added: "Fresh apple juice has health and nutrition benefits as well as a terrific taste. There are already some cracking home-grown brands and potential for those to continue to grow."
