Lidl uses Shrewsbury and Southport flower shows to make inroads into garden retail market

Lidl has made its first appearances at garden shows this month as the discount retailer seeks to challenge garden centres on price.

The German discounter exhibited at Shrewsbury Flower Show and Southport Flower Show to promote its garden offers this week.

Graham Pugh, a district manager for the chain which has 7,000 stores worldwide, said: "This is the first time we have exhibited and we hope to do it again. The shows have been really successful and we have had great feedback from customers.

"We will probably roll this out now across other regional flower shows because we have all the exhibition kit. We want to increase customer awareness of our offer of plants, and flower and garden equipment."

Pugh said top sellers were twin-stem Phalaenopsis orchids at £5 and hardy begonias at £3.
