Lewisham park takes London Planning Awards prize

A district park with paths defined by sculptural timber elements scooped the award for best new public space at last week's London Planning Awards.

The small green space that used to serve as a commuter shortcut was transformed with a network of footpaths leading to meeting points overlooked by pockets of vibrant landscape, lighting, seats and signs.

Judges were unanimous in hailing the good maintenance regime at Margaret McMillan Park, Lewisham, and access to all as key features. Mehron Kirk, a landscape architect at multidisciplinary firm BDP, led the design team.

The awards are run by business group London First along with the mayor of London, the Royal Town Planning Institute and London councils.
