Landscapes up for planning awards

£50m regeneration project by Rummey Design Associates up for award along with other high-profile projects

Coventry Phoenix Initiative, a £50m regeneration anchored around public art, is up for an award along with other high-profile projects. The Coventry scheme master-planned by landscape architect Rummey Design Associates includes public art by several artists including Susannah Heron. RDA hopes highly sculptural elements such as a glazed bridge and a towering polished metal spidery form above a square will help the scheme win the Royal Town Planning Awards. It is among 17 finalists out of 101 entries to the competition and other schemes include Queen Square in Bristol, Glasgow’s Hogganfield Park Nature Reserve and the regeneration of Staines High Street. The judges report said: “The projects show the need for staying power and a focus on the job to be done. They show a positive approach to solving problems and finding solutions. Winners will be announced on Thursday 5 February 2004.
