Landscape Institute cuts will harm its professional status - says SGD chairman

Landscape Institute (LI) archivist Annabel Downs has slammed the organisation for its plans to transfer the library and archive to another institution.

The landscape architect - who became chairman of the Society of Garden Designers last week - has been the Landscape Institute's archivist since 1995.

Annabel Downs now faces redundancy following proposals to transfer the LI library and archive elsewhere as part of £600,000 of a cost-cutting exercise.

"The Landscape Institute will no longer be a professional, intellectual body [without the library and archive]," Downs warned.

"It will just be an administrative, commercial-based operation. It will have no heart and no soul."

Members of the Landscape Institute have called an extraordinary general meeting to discuss the proposals - which also include making at least five staff redundant - on 22 January.
