The Landscape Group awarded Crick contract

The Landscape Group (TLG) has been awarded a new three year grounds maintenance contract with the Francis Crick Institute, which is currently under construction in London next to St. Pancras Station.

The Francis Crick Institute will be an inter-disciplinary medical research institute created by a consortium of six of the UK’s most successful scientific and academic organisations – the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the Wellcome Trust, UCL (University College London), Imperial College London and King’s College London.

The external landscape of the Crick will reflect its busy location at the heart of London, with hard landscaping and street furniture interspersed with almost 700 potted perennials and 24 specimen trees.

The Landscape Group will take over the maintenance of this external landscape following completion of construction. The site also includes a Community Garden which will be maintained as a community partnership between the Crick and London Wildlife Trust.

Head of soft facilities management at the Crick Matt Thomas said: "We put together a very rigorous and challenging tender process in order to find a grounds maintenance partner who has the same ethos, vision, and quality as the Institute. We are delighted to be working with TLG who have shown a real passion, capability and commitment to the project right through the tender process."

The Francis Crick Institute required a contractor that was able to deliver a highly reactive service to quickly deal with any maintenance issues that arise, including winter services such as gritting and snow clearance, minor tree works and ad hoc landscaping projects.

With The Landscape Group established in London the company was able to offer access to a high level of local resource, generating best value for the Crick.

Alistair Bayford, assistant director of strategic parks management at The Landscape Group said: "The busy location of the site presents a number of challenges to grounds maintenance contractors but our experience and aligning local infrastructure has meant that we are in an excellent position to deliver the highly responsive service required."

The maintenance schedule has been tailored to address the needs of a site in Central London with high daily footfall. TLG will visit the site daily to ensure that the site is free from litter and detritus, site furniture is safe and clean for visitors, drainage systems are all functioning correctly and all soft landscaping is presented to the highest standard. This service will be delivered by a team of two operatives led by a team leader.
