Landscape architects judge £1.5m design competition

Leading landscape architects are helping judge more than 100 bids to design a £1.5 million public square in Birmingham.

Landscape Institute past president Kathryn Moore and Patel Taylor landscape architect founding partner Andrew Taylor are on a judging panel to find a firm to design the new square in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter.

More than 100 firms from the UK, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, France and Australia have submitted initial bids to design the square.

It is hoped the "Golden Square" will provide a place for visitors and locals to meet and for markets and events to take place.

It is being developed as one of the first new projects within the council's Big City Plan, aimed at shaping and revitalising the area over the next 25 years.

The expert panel - which also includes RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) president-elect Ruth Reed - will shortlist six bidders.

Each company will be asked to develop its design and attend interviews, before a winner is chosen and a final design agreed later this year.
