Key themes revealed ahead of West Midlands Potato Day

The value of potato varieties that are resistant to potato cyst nematode (PCN) is among the many topics being considered at this year's West Midlands Potato Day.

The Potato Council-run event is being hosted by Jonathan Bubb, McCain's 2013 Southern Grower of the Year, on his Lynn South Farm in Shropshire on 19 June.

Chris Steele, who leads the event for the Potato Council, said: "We'll be looking at 'One Voice', the council's campaign to encourage the industry to work together and promote the natural goodness of potatoes via a simple set of messages.

"We'll also have the latest market overview of potato consumption from consumer experts and we'll be looking at efficiencies in production, competition for land - another issue close to many potato growers' hearts - and a 'risk versus reward' debate that will be a lively session."

Other sessions on the day are set to include practical demonstrations on plots of potato varieties that are tolerant of and resistant to PCN. The performance of these varieties will be compared to PCN-susceptible varieties.

The event will also include cultivation demonstrations - comparing different machinery and the effects they have on soil profiles - and best practice at harvest, grading and store loading.
