The world-famous garden has signed a deal with controlled-environment specialist Unigro, which specialises in hi-tech greenhouses, growth chambers, clean rooms and walk-in chambers, to build the block next March. Unigro will design and build a series of chambers and isolated bays with precise controllable climates for temperature, relative humidity, day length and light.
"While the design has been developed with containment as the top priority, sustainability issues have been addressed wherever possible," Unigro reported.
Commercial director Keith Hamp added: "Our brief was to provide highly contained facilities that are sustainable but have the capability for flexible expansion."
Kew curator Dr Nigel Taylor said: "Unigro understood our needs and offered the best design and build package at a competitive price."
