Keep Britain Tidy has retained the licence to run the Green Flag awards

DCLG Under secretary Don Foster told an HLF summit today that Keep Britain Tidy would run the award for the next five years.

Keep Britain Tidy had led the scheme for the last three years.

Foster said: "they will use the skills and expertise they already have to maintain and build on the the Green Flag brand.

"this is an exciting time for the scheme and we look forward to seeing Green Flag taken forward with innovation and enthusiasm.

"Open spaces are essential to bringing people of all ages and background together or for those without the luxury of their own gardens."

The government has been lambasted for rushing through the licensing award and for saying it would pull all funding. Foster did not comment on the funding issue.

One delegate heaped scorn on the long-running saga and likened the tender process to the government's recent botched rail franchise, which is being challenged by ousted Virgin.

"I would have liked Green Space and, or, The RHS to have won as they are the ones with the closest links to the local authority parks departments."
