John Woods Nurseries picks up Glee innovation award

John Woods Nurseries were rewarded with the Nursery Innovation award at Glee for their new concept of offering their Mattocks rose range potted into biodegradable and recyclable packaging specifically for the autumn season.

"Designed to eliminate the age-old problem of buying potted bare root roses in Autumn which makes root establishment more difficult, this product really caught our eye," said judge Caroline Owen. "The green aspect is an added bonus for any user. The price range is also good, making it a must for anyone wanting to avoid the normal pitfalls associated with re-potting roses."

John Woods Nurseries marketing manager Jo Davey said the concept has been developed in response to a stagnant rose market. "We wanted to encourage impulse buying of roses in the autumn."

"Recently bare root roses have been displayed at the back of the garden centre. With this product we hope they will be displayed at the front again."

She added: "We produced this colourful packaging to draw attention to roses at a time of year when there are only bare stems and no flowers."

"It can confuse consumers when they take a freshly potted rose out of the pot and the compost falls away, leaving a bare root rose, but with our biodegradable pot they only need to crack the pot and then plant the whole thing."

The packaging contains a small label which can be popped out from the larger pot wrap and can be placed over the stem.
