For many years he owned and ran John Robinson Houseplants, a houseplant wholesaler that expanded into production of planted baskets and other indoor containers. In 2001, the business was bought by Golden Acres Nurseries and he stayed on as manager. His son Jody also works in the business.
He was an outstanding salesman who was very respected by all of those in the industry who came across him. He was known for his kindness, wit and optimism. Golden Acres managing director Paul Richards said: "John's glass was never half empty. No matter what came his way, he could always see the good in it."
These traits ensured that Robinson always engendered a huge amount of loyalty in his team and they are all devastated by news of his death. Golden Acres said his passion for the business and motor sport was only surpassed by his passion for his family.
