Job Done: Redesign of golf club site, Manchester

Project Golf course redesign
Client Fairfield Golf & Sailing Club
Contractor Souters Sports

A vacant former reservoir has been added to a golf course as part of a project to redesign the site. Fairfield Golf & Sailing Club, in Audenshaw, Manchester, has extended its course to include new holes, green and tees.

The club employed Souters Sports to carry out the project, as well as working with former European Open champion and PGA professional Andrew Murray and Golf Design Scotland founder Richard Le Sueur. Souters Sports golf development manager Todd Jerome said a major part of the work had been to ensure that there was no negative impact on local wildlife, including great crested newts.

"The project start was deferred for months and a considerable amount of resources went into overcoming any potential negative impact on the environment," said Jerome. "To protect the great crested newts, we followed avoidance measures, erected newt fencing and conducted trapping and relocation throughout the project. We also created wetlands and ponds as part of the golf design and constructed newt hibernacula with the aim of creating a long-term, sustainable habitat with the potential to actually increase the newt population."

To address concerns that three holes of the reconfiguration were built on a landfill site, with the potential of asbestos, Souters Sports imported tested topsoil and measured and recorded all surface coverage levels. The new course is projected to open is spring 2010.
