Job done - New playground at Welland Park

Green Flag-winning Welland Park underwent a makeover, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, to improve its play space for children of all ages and abilities.

Project: Revamping a play area in Market Harborough
Client: Harborough District Council
Contractor: Proludic
Cost: £300,000

Putting the fun back into an award-winning park in Market Harborough was the brief from the local authority during the revamp of a popular play area.

Although the riverside park already featured crazy golf, tennis, bowling and picnic areas, Harborough District Council wanted to make it more attractive to younger visitors.

Nottingham-based company Proludic was chosen to design and install the playground. A team of 15 installers from Proludic built the new play area, which aimed to balance natural and urban zones, combining both timber and metal materials. The toddler area included a beach-style Hawaii zone and a water unit.

Proludic managing director Michael Hoenigmann said: "For younger children this area is like visiting the seaside for the day."

Sports equipment was installed for older children and included a Rodeoboard, inspired by windsurfing. Vitality units provide facilities for fitness enthusiasts and are based on gym-style equipment that helps to build muscle strength and endurance.

The central area of the park is a tall Volcano tower with tubular slides and varying climbing levels.

The park was opened last month by 7/7 London bombing survivor Gill Hicks.
