Eager to emulate the popularity of Top Gear, the BBC has brought in the motoring show's long-time host Jeremy Clarkson to "rev up" the corporation's flagship gardening programme.

In Friday's series opener, Clarkson will investigate the herbicidal properties of various "lethal but not strictly speaking illegal" chemicals, along with a range of flame-throwers, as the team set about transforming its new Birmingham site.

The show will also feature a "power mowing" contest between show regulars Carol Klein and Alys Fowler.

Meanwhile the remains of the TV series' former site, Berryfields, will be laid low as former presenter Monty Don gets to work with a chainsaw, rotavator and excavator provided by the show's new sponsor, Lopfloria.
