IoG suggests 3.5 per cent rise for groundsmen salary bands

The Institute of Groundsmanship (IoG) has recommended a 3.5 per cent increase in groundsmen's national minimum salary bands for 2008 - above the national average for public-sector employees and in line with expected private sector increases.

In 2008, average pay deals in the public sector are forecast to be two per cent to 2.5 per cent, and three per cent to 4.5 per cent in the private sector, says independent research company PBI Consulting.

The increases suggested by the IoG reflect the findings that the average salary of groundsmen in the IoG 2007 survey analysis equated to lower quartile or below the IoG salary band minimum. This, says the IoG, highlights the need to continue to improve industry understanding and reward for the role of the groundsman.

IoG chief executive Geoff Webb said: "Encouraging employers to pay better salaries to new entrants is essential if we are to attract more young people into the profession. "They're the lifeblood of the grounds care sector as the country sets its sights on the 2012 Olympics."

"So we must make every effort now to encourage them into the industry, to avoid a future skills gap and to sustain the provision of both community level and world-class playing surfaces in the future."

The IOG recommended 2008 national basic salary bands are:
Grounds Manager £27,150 to £36,720
Head Groundsman £23,155 to £28,335
Deputy Head Groundsman £18,945 to £23,145
Groundsman (Skilled) £17,715 to £21,640
Groundsman £14,190 to £17,340
Junior Groundsman (aged 17) £12,025
Junior Groundsman (aged 16) £10,020.
