IoG to celebrate 75th anniversary at Emirates stadium

The Institute of Groundsmanship (IoG) is building up to a spectacular 75th anniversary bash, it says.

The IoG's 10,000 or so members will descend on the Emirates Stadium in October 2009 for a one-day sports-turf conference.

"Having doubled the membership over the past two years we will continue to follow the institute's original mission," said chief executive Geoff Webb.

"We want to improve the status of staff and the standard of groundsmanship and have been working with national governing bodies."

These included cricket chiefs and the Football Association for a soon-to-be-launched training initiative for grassroots grounds professionals.

Webb said the institute had transformed itself over the past two years with the establishment of the IoG Academy for training at every stage of the career.

"There is still much to do. Grounds staff are still not paid well and work in difficult conditions. We must evolve to meet the demands of an ever-changing industry."

WH Bowles, head groundsman of Eton College, helped launch the institute in 1934 at a pub by Cannon Street Station in London.
