International orchid fair launches in Switzerland

First orchid fair opens with christening of Cypripedium 'Hans Erni'

Swiss artist Hans Erni launched Orchideea ’05 — the first international orchid fair in Lucerne, 5-8 May — by christening the Cypripedium Hans Erni. It was one of several introductions at what looks set to become an annual event. More than 50 exhibitors from 10 countries took part, including breeders, garden centres and orchid societies. The theme of the event was Element Earth. German orchid expert and author Frank Roellke introduced his not-yet-registered Paphinia x Memoria Remo Lombardi. It will also be shown at Newbury Orchid Fair (25-26 June) and at the RHS National Orchid Show in London (17-18 September). Winner in several categories, Taiwanese exhibitor Kao Shui En said: “The sales are beyond expectations and the atmosphere is friendly.” The exhibition’s initiator Johann Blaettler is already organising next year’s fair, which will be themed Element Air. He would welcome English displays at Orchideea ’06. See
