He first worked at Waterers of Twyford and then in the horticultural unit of the University of Reading before training at Pershore College. He later worked on the Wiltshire education committee at Palmer Gardens in Trowbridge.
In 1964 he moved to develop training facilities for young horticulturists on Jersey until retiring in 1994. He developed extensive horticultural training programmes.
In 1971, Shaw was awarded the City & Guilds Insignia Award for his 10,000-word treatise on the glasshouse industry on Jersey. He presented a weekly show on Radio Jersey from 1982 to 1997 and was made a fellow of the IoH in 2003.
