An anti-artificial turf petition asking for planning permission to be required for the laying of "Astroturf Lawns / Artificial Grass" has reached 10,000 signatures, the threshold at which the UK Government says it will respond.
Concerns include the the loss of carbon storage when natural lawns or pitches are replaced with synthetic turf, and the leakage of plastic and microplastics into environment.
On the other hand, according to Google Trends data demand for artificial grass surged during the 2020 lockdown as homeowners sought a 'low maintenance' way to enjoy their gardens while trapped at home.
Horticulture Week would like to know the view of the the suppliers and installers both natural and synthetic turf to find out if the boom in Google searches translated into orders, and what the industry makes of the idea of a requirement for planning permission.
