The water industry and Defra were tasked with developing a code of practice that ensured consistent and fair nationwide application of water restrictions. The code has yet to appear and the HTA is working with MPs to raise the issue at the second reading in the House of Commons on 15 December with a view to tabling an amendment at the committee stage in January.
HTA business development director Tim Briercliffe said: "The droughts of 2006 resulted in £12m in sales loss to the gardening industry. A code of practice that is specific and consistent across all water companies in the UK will provide a sound and practical approach in handling water restrictions."
The HTA, Turfgrass Growers Association and water efficiency group Waterwise have drawn up a code they wish to see included.
