Stonewater will donate £50 to CFT for every house it builds, enough for five trees, as well as planting as least one tree for every house. It is is believed to be the first housing provider to make such a commitment.

Initiating the programme at a site in Pontefract, West Yorkshire on 27 March, its chair George Blunden said: "Today is an important day when we have planted our very first tree as part of the Northern Forest project, a great opportunity to deploy a natural solution that’s much older than we are but has the most contemporary relevance to the work we do."

He added: "We are pleased to be the leading sector figure in this area, and we encourage other organisations to do more to leave a legacy for the future generations."

The trees in the area will contribute to the White Rose Forest, one of the four community forests which together will comprise the coast-to-coast Northern Forest scheme.

CFT fundraising manager Sian Day said: "The Northern Forest will unlock many environmental as well as social benefits.

"As a charity, we rely on donations and the support of organisations like Stonewater to achieve the vision of the Northern Forest. Together we will continue to champion the many positive community impacts that arise when planting more trees."

Stonewater manages and owns 32,000 homes of different types across England, and plans to build nearly 5,000 more over the next four years.
