Retailer: Hampstead Garden Centre, London
The year has started well at Hampstead Garden Centre despite the national decline in retail sales. Manager Bob Blyth said Christmas had gone well. "We do have a very good display at Christmas time. We're a small centre but the shop always looks good and that draws people back year after year. We did very well on Christmas trees and sold out again." He attributed this to having good stock which encourages customers to come back each year.
Pots: The discount currently offered on some pot ranges has helped to lift combined sales. "Our selection at this time of year is normally not very good but we have a good range this year and customers are taking advantage of it," Blyth added.
Shrubs: At this time of year, Hampstead Garden Centre also offers a discount on shrubs, which has helped lift their sale.
Bird care: Being in a large residential area with many back gardens means plenty of opportunity to sell bird seed and the cooler weather is helping to stimulate sales.
