Now ideas are being floated on how to fill the R&D vacuum post - AHDB Horticulture levy board.
Models in Belgium and Australia could be the way forward for the UK, where growers voted against the bureacracy, cost and lack of engagement of the AHDB.
In Australia, the 5% statutory 'pot' nursery levy is paid on potted plants that are produced in Australia. This levy is paid by nursery industry businesses at the point of purchase of plant pots where manufacturers act as collection agents for the Australian Government. The Australian Government collects the levy and passes the funds on to R&D body Hort Innovation, which works with industry to make strategic investments in R&D and marketing using the levy funds collected. R&D investments also attracting additional financial contributions from the Australian Government.
But perhaps you have other ideas?
Horticulture Week would like to find out what readers from the ornamentals and fresh produce production sectors think.
