Horticuture students represent UK in HortOlympics

A team from Norfolk college Easton and Otley will be travelling to Estonia to represent the UK in a horticultural skills challenge.

The students – from Easton and Otley College – will be taking part in an event called the ‘HortOLYMPICS 2019’ that will be held in Rapina between 29 May and 1 June 2019.

Previously, teams from the college have participated in a farming equivalent to this event called the
AGROLYMPICS, however this will be the first time that Easton and Otley has taken part in this
specific occasion.

Toby Jones from Trunch and James Hunt make up the team. The duo are both studying on a level three horticultural course at the Norfolk campus of Easton and Otley College.

They will have to undertake a number of skills challenges over two days that will test their skills in
areas such as plant identification and seed sowing.

Jones said: "We’ve had a look over the tasks and we will be doing lots of preparation in the next
couple of weeks. Hopefully we can come back with a medal. We are certainly not just going there to
make up the numbers."

Hunt said: "I think this experience will help us in the long run. It will be great to represent our country. We’ve been told they play the national anthems – so that will put a spring in our step. If we got to choose a walk on song in addition to the national anthem, I’d go for Eye of the Tiger from the Rocky films."

Horticultural lecturer Rob Walton said: "They students have worked hard all year and I think they know a lot more than they realise. I feel they are very suited to this competition. They are good guys and it would be a great reward for them to do well at this event. It would also be brilliant to help raise the profile of horticulture at the college. If they were to medal in Estonia I would be incredibly proud. I might even shed a little tear."
