Horticulture Week Podcast: Protecting the legacy of John Brookes at Denmans Garden

Matthew Appleby and Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn van Paasschen, chair of the John Brookes-Denmans Foundation, speaks about the legacy of legendary garden designer, the late John Brookes and the work she is doing to promote his garden, Denmans, in West Sussex. Brookes died aged 84 in 2018 and is probably now more influential than ever in garden design circles.

You can have a drinks party in a John Brooks garden and you can read a book in a John Brooks garden, and if you didn't like gardening you could do very little gardening indeed, because for him it was about what the client wanted and how they want to use the space around their house - all of these ideas are completely current.

Van Paasschen is a garden designer and writer who is working on a new initiative to perpetuate the legacy of Brookes, having established a trust dedicated to continue his design legacy and the renovation and preservation of Denmans Garden.

She began her career as a US Senate legislative staffer on economic issues for Senators Slade Gordon and the late Senator John McCain and tells the HW podcast about her journey from US politics to British gardens.

Podcast presenter: HW editor Matthew Appleby
Producer: HW digital content manager, Christina Taylor
