Horticulture Week Podcast: Lawncare Association's David Hedges Gower speaks on Monty Don row and artificial turf

David Hedges Gower, founder of the Lawn Association, hit the headlines in March when he got into a no-mow row with Gardeners world presenter Monty Don, who told the Radio Times "Cutting grass burns lots of fossil fuel, makes a filthy noise, and is about the most injurious thing you can do to wildlife."

The turf expert hit back saying Don was wrong and lawncare is now greener than the TV gardener thinks.

Hedges-Gower reveals how he and Don will never be friends as he is a turf lover and Don is not.

However, greener grass is on the horizon, with robotic mowers coming down in price to replace petrol mowers and campaigns to require planning permission for plastic grass.

Hedges Gower calls for more education on turf's benefits and how to use it and for a coordinated campaign against artificial turf and is vocal about how unsustainable he believes professional sports turf is.

His work on high traffic turf at the National Trust's Hidcote garden involves replacing sports turf-style grass.

He is also critical of conventional garden centre weed and feed offers and has launched True Range Products that he says are a better option for turf lovers.
