History of plant medicine showcased at newly opened Garden of Medicinal Plants

The new Garden of Medicinal Plants at Chelsea Physic Garden opened on 1 April.

Head gardener and designer Nick Bailey said: "After an autumn and winter of construction, research and sourcing plants from around the world, the new garden is all but complete.

"The team worked beyond the call of duty to create this complex, inspirational living museum that promises to deliver an unrivalled chronological tour through the history of plant medicine."

Curator Christopher Bailes said: "It's exciting to see the new Garden of Medicinal Plants taking shape as the new home for Chelsea Physic Garden's most important plant collection."

He added: "Growing medicinal plants was the original purpose for which the garden was first created by the Society of Apothecaries in 1673 and this iconic collection is now being brought right up to date in a new garden designed for the 21st century."
