Help make the Northern Forest happen, North of England leaders urge PM

More than 120 northern England MPs and local authority leaders have written to the Prime Minister urging him to back the Northern Forest initiative with practical measures.

The letter calls on the PM to "look at opportunities to enable its delivery, including supporting the development of green investment models, government grants, developer levies and contributions and support from offsetting planned government infrastructure projects".

The signatories also urge the PM to "visit the region and plant a tree as part of the project".

The letter adds: "It is expected that the Northern Forest will generate around £2.5 billion worth of social, economic and environmental benefits – at least a five-fold return on investment."

Already more than 600,000 trees have been planted in the project, expected to rise to 50 million over the next 25 years.
