Grower launches green Narcissus

Fashion trend among breeders brings rise to green daffodil

The co-founder of Van Hage Garden Company has unveiled an unusual green Narcissus. Cor van Hage exhibited the plant at the RHS Flower Show at Wisley last month. He said: “Green is the thing at the moment. It’s the fashion among breeders and people trying to find new varieties — hobbyists and commercial people. “The green is something different. The big boys are now working on that colour very seriously. Narcissus ‘Viridiflora’ holds the key to this green evolution. “We aim eventually to create pot grown, autumn-flowering, miniature narcissi in various colours, which would include various shades of green. These could flower to coincide with the very important Christmas season.” The company behind Narcissus ‘Viridiflora’ is Leenen of Holland, which gave Van Hage 50 bulbs several years ago. Van Hage said he will bring the plant on to the market in three or four years and will have the sole selling rights in the UK.
