Groundwork Sheffield unveils green roof guide

Groundwork Sheffield has published a green-roof code of best practice targeted at designers, specifiers and anyone who installs and maintains green roofs.

The 25-page GRO Green Roof Guide was funded from a £392,000 EU grant and includes sections on design, water-proofing, drainage and irrigation, site preparation, safety and access.

"Green roofs are vital in helping cities adapt to climate change," said Groundwork Sheffield project manager Anna Cooper. "But they can only provide environmental benefits if they are designed and well installed.

"This guide was prompted by bad examples cropping up that were giving green roofs a bad name. We wanted to provide guidance and minimum standards to which contractors would work."
