Queen’s Park is the most extensive living element of the public realm in Loughborough. An important leisure and recreation resource for the town since its inception, it continues to be widely used today. The park was awarded Green Flag status for the first time in 2008 and has retained it ever since. Its stunning floral displays have also made an important contribution to the town winning gold and best in the small city category in the 2015 East Midlands in Bloom competition. Key features of the 4ha park include many formal floral beds, a bandstand, bowling green, two ponds and three play areas.
Contractor idverde, via its subsidiary company Quadron, has maintained Queen’s Park since April 2014. The park is maintained on a daily basis by a head gardener and a horticultural supervisor. There is a dedicated ranger presence in the park (also idverde staff) for patrols and support with a variety of tasks such as litter picking.
Queen’s Park has an active friends group with whom idverde has forged an excellent relationship, arranging numerous community activities. Pesticide use is avoided in the park wherever possible and peat is no longer used.
"This lovely park in the centre of Loughborough is very well maintained by the contractor under a 20-year rolling maintenance programme," the judges noted. "There has already been a great deal of progressive improvement and, together with the Friends of Queen’s Park, the contractor is making great strides to restore this Victorian gem to its former glory. A Green Flag park since 2008, it is a credit to the contractor and the community."
