Each of the many individual memorial gardens is separated from the others by Yew hedging and, in addition to the other aspects of their landscape maintenance work, the contractor's team trims 4.5km of hedge each year

Judges' comments: This is a wonderful site has been pulled back by the contractor from a terribly overgrown state and is now maintained with great sensitivity to a very high level by a dedicated and passionate team. The hedge trimming is done beautifully.

Despite being the UK's 12th busiest crematorium, the site exudes peace and tranquillity. Horticultural improvements within a tight budget is commendable, notably the wild flower areas. Trees, shrubs, roses and seasonal bedding create year-round colour.

Project: Stapenhill Gardens, Staffordshire
Client: East Staffordshire Council

The whole park was a riot of colour with numerous bedding and carpet displays throughout. The two dedicated staff undertake their duties to a high standard. The park is enhanced by a backdrop of mature trees.

Client: National Maritime Museum

This is a prime heritage site that is being proactively managed by this BALI contractor to ensure that the landscape is able to cope with the massive impact of visitors to the site.

IDC Greenscapes
Project: Ingatestone, Essex
Client: Ingatestone & Fryering Parish Council

Sweetcorn and broccoli in summer bedding! This small, local company has shown a creative approach to the areas it maintains from high street bedding to graveyards - with not a weed in sight.

John O'Conner (Grounds Maintenance)
Project: Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex
Client: Rother District Council

With park flowerbeds, sports grounds and amenity areas within the schedule, the contractors' staff work to a universally high standard. New planting along the Bexhill seafront are well maintained despite the difficult conditions.

The contractor has worked closely with the client to bring improvements to the maintenance of this prestigious business, retail and residential West End location. An excellent service ethos was evident.

Bartholomew Landscaping
Project: Juniper Drive, London
Client: Battersea Reach

A series of public to semi-private open spaces formed the major part of maintenance for the prestigious Thameside apartment development.

The work was of a high standard despite difficult site conditions, with planting cut back and replanting maintaining the integrity of the original schemes.

This 18th-century park with several historic buildings is now a beautifully adapted business park with a very exacting maintenance specification.

Judges' comments: The passion of the contractor's staff on the ground and the pride they take in their work is evident for all to see. The hedge trimming is perfect, the wild flower meadow is wonderful and all areas are meticulously cared for. A cracking scheme.

Client: Aspire Defence Services

A considerable logistical challenge with 80 staff covering five sites, maintaining general camp areas, officers' mess areas, soldiers' accommodation, sports grounds and cemeteries. Maintenance has perfectly matched the specification set at each camp and the passion of staff and management is evident.

Project: Frome Community Hospital, Somerset

This site demonstrates what can be achieved by an effective contractor despite budgetary constraints.

Overall, a neat, tidy site providing an appropriate level of maintenance commensurate with the needs of the hospital.

Bartholomew Landscaping
Project: Colherne Court, London

A successful scheme managed within tight budgets. The mature soft landscaped site and large grassed areas are used for a range of leisure pursuits and the company has dealt professionally with the residents' committee.

Ground Control
Project: Suffolk

The contractor has held this contract for more then 15 years. The site includes a range of SSSI areas that require very specific maintenance in collaboration with Natural England. Airside grass areas presents challenges and requires specialist trained staff. Despite its vastness, the site was immaculate.

Nurture Landscapes
Project: Aztec West Business Park, Bristol
Client: Goodman

The scheme's success revolves around the enthusiastic staff taking pride in what they do. The company has improved quality of maintenance and instigated a regime of pruning and regeneration with new planting that has improved the site's overall look.
