The client’s brief was for Gavin Jones to work alongside the main contractor (BWI) to produce working drawings from the original concept drawings by Morey Smith and to implement the scheme on the fourth-floor terrace. The roof terrace was to provide a space that was also a practical area that could be used for meetings, dining, breakout areas and even exercise classes. Gavin Jones attended many meetings with the project design team prior to commencing on site to discuss all the detailed drawings including the general arrangement, living wall, irrigation, wild flower/orchard meadow, feature walls, planters, benches, pergolas, zinc tables, lighting, boundary panels and decking.

Judges’ comments

"This extensive and very exposed site has been transformed by the contractor to provide a beautiful rooftop space where staff, clients and visitors can gather for informal meetings or lunch.

"The contractor had to liaise with residents adjacent to the building and with the client to ensure there was no disruption to the working day for staff in the building as materials were brought in. The construction and planting have been expertly carried out with impressive attention to detail."
