High-end office block Verde is the refurbished 11-floor Eland House building in Victoria. Bowles & Wyer, contracted by ISG Fit Out, installed bespoke zinc/wooden planters along with a water feature and replacement porcelain tiles over a total area of approximately 800sq m across floors nine and ten on behalf of a new tenant.
The contract included a fully automated irrigation system with lighting and external plug sockets. Planters were filled with a bespoke lightweight soil specifically formulated to accommodate load-bearing constraints and were planted with a selection of mature olives, pines, multi-stemmed Buxus and herbaceous planting.
All materials and trees had to be lifted via a tower crane over the course of two weekends, with 100 lifts over two days. Day-to-day access was restricted to one goods lift for all other materials and the total contract length was six weeks.
"The installation of these roof gardens across the ninth and tenth floors of a refurbished high-end office development in London has been beautifully executed by the contractor. Access was challenging, with large items and trees being lifted by tower crane during limited permitted periods and other materials brought up by goods lift, again with restricted usage. Works included the installation of a fully automated irrigation and lighting system, paving, bespoke seating and planters. Specially formulated lightweight soil was used to plant mature olives, pines, multi-stemmed buxus and herbaceous planting. This is a superb installation of a stunning Tom Stuart-Smith design."

This demanding high-density mixed-use project, nestled among three historic buildings in Ealing, features retail and community uses at street level and 698 apartments on upper floors with private courtyards, terraces and balconies. Kingston Landscape Group installed green roofs, terraces and podium gardens across eight different locations among the high-value apartments.
The sedum matting green roofs are inaccessible to residents but important due to the increase in biodiversity that will result. The project was full of logistical challenges. Being located in the busy centre of Ealing made getting things to site difficult. Materials had to be moved by crane and hoist and through buildings. The result is a stunning mix of public realm and private residential areas.
