Green Flag for Manchester's Southern cemetery

One of Europe's biggest cemeteries and the resting place of artist LS Lowry has won a Green Flag award after three years of improvements.

Staff at the 55ha Southern Cemetery in Manchester hoisted the flag last week after the city council worked with the friends group and partners such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to raise standards. Around 4,000 headstones, laid down for safety, were reset at the site where Lowry and Victorian philanthropist John Rylands were laid to rest.
