The first stage of the Green Flag Award application process is now open. Previous applicants will be emailed a username and password to allow them to access the application form, which was made available on 1 November, but new site applications must register online.

All applicants have until 31 January 2010 to submit their site for consideration.

2009 was the first year the awards were managed by the consortium of Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and GreenSpace, and saw more than 1,000 sites across England and Wales gaining the accolade.

A new Green Flag website was launched this week.
