Green champion award for Calderdale Council parks manager

Calderdale Council's parks and street scene support services manager Mark Dempsey has been named Green Champion in a regional awards scheme.

The Halifax Evening Courier newspaper has awarded Calderdale Council's parks and street scene support services manager Mark Dempsey a prestigious award.

Mark Dempsey scooped the Green Champion award, as part of the newspaper's Community and Environment Awards.

Judges were impressed with Mark Dempsey's research into the most environmentally-friendly pattern to use when cutting grass and implementation as council parks department policy.

His work on composting green waste and giving it away free to gardeners was also recognised.

The judges commented: "This guy is fantastic. He is intent on lowering the district's carbon footprint and his enthusiasm is infectious."

Mark Dempsey is a founding member of the Northern Amenity Forum.
