Grant scheme to aid green space

A £50m scheme to improve green spaces rolled into action last week, with the first grant helping locals transform a disused lodge into a wildlife oasis.

The Fern Gore community wildlife project was awarded almost £50,000 for locals to heel in plants to the site in Accrington, Lancashire. Groundwork Pennine Lancashire will work with a local residents' group to improve access and create planted areas for wildlife to thrive and visitors to enjoy.

Community Spaces launched this year with Big Lottery Fund and Groundwork UK offering grants up to £49,999. The cash limit was extended to £450,000 in July.

Groundwork chief executive Tony Hawkhead said: "Now (that) groups can apply for more money we hope more neighbourhoods in England will improve public spaces."
