Government offers £5m grant for crime protection

The Government has announced a new £5m grants programme to help small retailers protect themselves against crime.

The funding is part of the new Retail Crime Action Plan (RCAP), which has been drawn up in partnership with the retail industry to help small businesses to prevent crime. Businesses in 50 crime hotspots will be eligible for grants of £3,000 to spend on security devices including alarms, UV markers and security grills.

Home Office minister Alan Campbell said: "I am determined to ensure that small businesses are not taken advantage of during these hard economic times."

The action plan also includes an online survey that businesses can fill in to determine how secure they are. See www.homeoffice.gov.uk/secureyourbusiness.

HW has launched a map charting horticultural firms hit by the growing crime wave to raise awareness and focus the attention of relevant bodies. See www.HorticultureWeek.co.uk/crime.
