Glamorgan appoints groundsman for the Ashes

Glamorgan County Cricket club have appointed groundsman Andy Atkinson in a temporary role to oversee preparations for 2009's England match against Australia at Cardiff.

Previous groundsman Len Smith took early retirement last month.

Atkinson joins Glamorgan from his role as the chief pitch consultant for ICC. He was head groundsman at Newlands in Cape Town and the Wanderers in Johannesburg before that.

The main role will be to regenerate the square and prepare a new wicket for the Australia match. He will also oversee the installation of the relayed outfield and drainage system this winter and help to find a new head groundsman for February 2009 appointment.

Glamorgan chairman Paul Russell said: “Andy's appointment brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club and I am extremely confident that our preparation of the wicket, square and outfield for the Ashes Test will be second to none.”
